Whablow History
Whablow Town was founded in 2000 and played their first match in September 2000. The two creators of the team, Martin Kendrick (above, right) and Paul Neville (above, left) grouped together players from Ilford County High School to play in the Barking Youth Football League. The first few matches bore little fruit, but finally Neil Bianchi scored Whablow's first ever goal away at Wingate and Finchley in the League Cup. Bianchi ended the season as top scorer with 6 goals. Improvement over the season was noticeable, but a win remained elusive, despite close matches against Ainsley Wood (1-3) and Westhamians (4-7). The second season looked promising, but the early sacking of coach Mehmet Boztepe left the Whablow camp divided. Problems ensued and culminated in co-managers Martin Kendrick and Paul Neville resigning in November. Edward Lennard, David Corck-Adelman and Abdul Munshi took on the job, and once again Whablow had a better end to the season. The defeats got even smaller, with a 2-1 defeat at home to Loughton F.C. and a 3-2 defeat away at Collier Row. The season ended with a crushing defeat at Royal Falcons, and sadly that win was never to be.
The club quit the Barking Youth Football League at the end of the 2001-02 season, with almost all of their players heading off to various universities across the country. The First Whablow Reunion took place in the Easter of 2003, and was a great success with over 20 players attending. Another get together was arranged in the Christmas holidays, but only a dozen or so players braved the cold conditions- still, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended.
The next reunion is currently set to be over the weekend of the 11th April 2004. Please contact me if you want further details.
