Goalkeepers

JAMIE STEED

Top shot-stopper who made up for his lack of agility with good positioning and lightning reactions. After a promising opening season he suffered from an injury-ravaged second, making only five appearances. His return between the sticks away at Collier Row was memorable though, and his return to top form in that game helped Whablow get their best ever result. Also made appearances outfield and scored a hat-trick away at Westhamians in a 7-4 defeat, including a shot from 25 yards and a penalty.

TIM DAVIDSON

Signed mid-way through the first season after a trial at Clayhall Park, and after a shaky start as an emergency left-back at home to Roding Valley, he soon began to impress with confident performances in goal in the absence of injury-prone 'keeper Jamie Steed. His most notable performance was away at Wingate and Finchley, where the result was kept down to 7-0 despite Whablow fielding a much weakened side.

JASON PANCHAL

The Crystal Palace Youth goalkeeper made his one Whablow appearance in a pre-season friendly against Wingate & Finchley in the first season, and clearly showed his ability with a man-of-the-match performance for The Blowers.

MURALI VIMALANATHAN

After making his first appearance in Whablow's first ever game as an outfield sub, he only played once more- in goal in a 17-1 defeat at Wingate & Finchley.

Defenders

PAUL NEVILLE

Consistent right-back who moved into the centre of defence for much of the second season. After an ever present first season, he only missed one match in the second- a home tie against Millwall Albion B. Made 35 appearances in total and now plays for Old Parkonians and attends Reading University.

KAM KUMAR

Rock-hard centre half whose no-nonsense style of play made him suited to the Barking Youth Football League. He was tried out right across the defence and also briefly as a central midfielder, but he always looked t his best playing as a centre back. Even so, his commitment to Whablow was often questionable and he quit the side at the end of the first season.

KWAN LEUNG

Inspirational captain whose combination of well-timed tackling and clever passing made him a clear choice for the Player Of The Year award in the opening season. Moved to midfield for much of the second year, where he again proved to be an important cog in the Whablow machine, even though he was slightly less consistent.

ROBERT BUTTWELL

Skillful and pacy sweeper who could also play in midfield or upfront, and even ended one game in goal! Scored all of his goals at Clayhall Park, including the goal of the season at home to Roding Valley. It came after a through ball by Kam Kumar, and his finish with the outside of his right boot from about 20 yards remains one of the most memorable moments from any Whablow game.

EDWARD LENNARD

Tall centre back who played well in tandem with the more agile Buttwell when they were in central defence together during the second season. He spent the early parts of the first season at left back, but it soon became clear he was needed in the centre after John Fitzsimons left the club. After an inconsistent first season he impressed in the second with a number of solid displays, and ended the season with Whablow's last ever goal in the 3-2 reverse at Collier Row. Now plays for Old Parkonians where he scored 3 goals in 10 games in the 2002-3 season, and is currently studying at the University of Hertfordshire.

SUNNY LACHANAH

Hard-tackling pacy left-back who looked equally comfortable anywhere across the defence or midfield. After an assured first few games his commitment began to wane, and it came as no surprise when he quit the club at the end of the 2000-01 season. Arguably Whablow's best left back, his defensive ability and composure on the ball were sorely missed in the second season, and he wasn't fully replaced until the signing of Steven Saffer in January 2002.

JOE KENDRICK

Utility man whose best appearances were at centre back. Powerful warhorse whose inconsistensy cost him any chance of a place in Whablow's best XI of all time. He had the confidence, and a claim that he was a member of the Slough Town Youth Team, but his slightly selfish manner on the ball left many of the players around him frustrated.

EUGENE OGBEWELE

Lively full-back with a good eye for goal. His attacking play from defence often left him out of position, but also had its advantages such as the goal he scored in the home fixture against Woodberry Down. Another player whose commitment could often be questioned though, and towards the end of the second season he disappeared never to be seen again.

SIV SIVANESAN

I would write nice things about this con-artist but as he gave me a blank yearbook cd and no actual yearbook, I think it's only fair to say that he was a fat lazy-ass left back.... just joking, he was a welcome member of the side who filled the left back slot adequately after Lachanah left the club.

STEVEN SAFFER

Pacy left back who was built like a brick s***house. His power and pace made him well suited to the full back position, and he may well have become one of the Whablow greats had he not been one of the more injury prone players. Also played in goal occasionally.

TONY NEVILLE

Made two appearances for Whablow at left-back, and helped balance the defence with his left-footedness. Currently studying for a Masters at the University of Nottingham.

Midfielders

MARTIN KENDRICK

Skillful midfielder who looked comfortable anywhere across the midfield. His ability to battle hard was often overlooked, but combined with his passing and shooting, when on form he was one of Whablow's best players. He contributed 2 goals in the first season- his first came after he rounded the keeper away at Wingate and Finchley early on in the legendary 23-3 defeat, and he soon doubled his tally in an away match against Lakeview, where he fired home from 8 yards after Neville's weak shot from a corner had been cleared off the line. After making the right midfield slot his own in the first season, in the second he found his best form on the opposite flank, capably filling the problematic left midfield position. He now studies at the University of Warwick and recently scored for his new side Collin.

DAVID CORCK-ADELMAN

Joined the club for the second season and immeadiately installed himself as a regular in the centre of midfield. He came with a big reputation to live up to, having been a player in the Ilford County High School first team for many seasons, and after a strong start he soon became a mainstay in the Whablow team as well. He started the season as a defensive midfielder, but soon was urged into a more defensive role, and finished the season switching position from match to match. He still looked one of Whablow's more composed players wherever he played, and captained Whablow in the absence of Kwan Leung. He now studies at Southampton University.

ABDUL MUNSHI

Arguably the most improved player over the course of the second season, his future looks bright as he works towards becoming the complete midfielder. Showed his potential in the home defeat to Woodberry Down, as he set up both goals and contributed well defensively as cover for the back four.

2001-02: 15 apps 0 goals Ave.Rat: 7.00

RAV MANN

After making his trial appearance in the shocking 23-0 away defeat to semi-pro side Millwall Albion 'A', many thought we'd never see this player again. He was persuaded to return though, and his skill and pace was reminiscent of current Tottenham striker Freddie Kanoute. Despite this, his workrate was poor, and his commitment to the side even worse, and after two further appearances he decided to leave, aiming to find a better club to play for.

MURSHED ANWAR

Despite his inept tackling, Murshed caused opposition defences a surprising amount of worry with his calmness when presented a chance in front of goal. In fairness, he only had two chances in the whole of the first season, but he scored them both so you can't beat that. Improved his general play in the second season, and became the first Whablow player to be booked after a wild kick at an opponent in a home match at Clayhall Park. He now studies at Southampton University.

DONALD OKOSUN

His ability on the ball was never in doubt, but his commitment to the cause often was. He was another player who showed a lot of potential, but without a manager it was hard to work out what his best position was. He played in defence and midfield, but never really showed his talent on any consistent basis. This was partly due to a recurring foot injury though, which he suffered from all season.

JOHN NEWTON

Good all-round midfielder with a strong first touch, he was missed when he quit the club along with player-manager Mehmet Boztepe at the start of the second season. He only played one game, coming on as sub in the pre-season friendly away at Ainslie Wood, but clearly he would have been a first team regular if he had chosen to stay.

ALEX EDWARDS

After months of regestration problems, Alex Edwards finally signed for the club in late 2001, and filled the vacant right midfield slot with Martin Kendrick now playing on the left hand side. He was strong and committed, and also played well as an emergency right back in early 2002.

ABDUL PATEL

Quiet, small midfielder who mainly operated on the left wing. He lacked the strength to really compete in the Barking Youth Football League, and soon lost interest in playing for Whablow.

Strikers

NEIL BIANCHI

Top scorer in both seasons and one of those strikers who just has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. His pace was his main asset, scoring many goals latching onto through-balls from midfield. He came in for some criticism over his workrate, but twelve goals in twenty-eight appearances is a good scoring rate at any level, and he was missed when he was unavailable due to injury for a couple of months in the second season. He now goes to Oxford University.

JOHN HOQUE

Hardworking striker who amazingly only had one shot in his first season. Played in goal for much of the second and impressed with some good performances between the sticks.

JACKY CHAN

Quick forward man who never really took his obvious ability in training into the match scenario. His most legendary match was probably in the first season against Harlow Town Youth in the County Cup, when, as his shirt had no squad number on the back, he pinned a piece of paper with '30' written on it to his back instead.

ORANE FISHER

Charlton youth striker who played one match in his trial period at Whablow. His performance, which included setting up a goal for Neil Bianchi, caused a club bigger than Whablow to come in and sign him up.

2001-02: 1 app 0 goals Ave. Rat: 8.00

JOHN-LERY STROUD

Showed potential in his short spell at the club, including a larger-than-life performance in the 13-4 thrashing of Beal, (although that's not hard when your life is that size) but left Whablow when the going got tough to further his Saturday League career with Old Parkonians. He never really got used to the strength required in the Barking Youth League, which wasn't helped by unsympathetic refereeing.

MEHMET BOZTEPE

Many have learnt from Mehmet's style of shooting- some managers lead by example, he lead by lack of example. No control, no presence, no ability. He was briefly manager of the club before the start of the 2001-02 season, but his contreversial decision to cull the squad down to sixteen members was stopped by founders Martin Kendrick and Paul Neville, as it went against the club's policy and reason for starting in the first place.

2001-02: 1 app 0 goals

CHRIS TRELOAR

A tall confident striker, 'Tree' promised to be the answer to Whablow's problems in finding a partner for the prolific Neil Bianchi. He never really settled though, and after a number of average performances he parted company with the club.
